Hello Mountain Home School Skiers and Snowboarders,

Good news, Badger is opening. We are planning to have our first ski day thisMonday, January 30th. If you have already paid for skiing I will assume thatyou are planning on coming this Monday. If you would like to cancel for thisMonday please call me no later then Friday at noon. For those that have notpaid, I can give you until tomorrow January 26th, 1pm to pay. Don't forget thatevery Monday you need to call our ski message line to confirm that we are infact skiing. That number is (559) 642-1422 and the extension is #5. Pleaseremember that if you are renting equipment, arrive no later then 8:45am thefirst day. Please check in with me inside the lodge, many of you still havepaperwork incomplete.

If you are one of my ski or snowboard instructors, we have a training day thisFriday, January 27th. I highly encourage those that can attend to go. According to Badger Pass, at this time they are not expecting to open bythis Monday January 23, 2012. So skiing is canceled for this next week.Hopefully this weekends storm will begin to form the base they need to open thefollowing week. The reason for this email is that due to thelack of snow there will be no skiing next Monday, January 9th. In addition wewill not have a ski instructor training this Friday. If you already paid forskiing, your money will carry forward. The next ski payment will be due January 17th for our January 23rd ski date. Hopefully we will receive some snow by then.

Ski Payment price increase.

I was recently informed by Badger Pass Ski Resort that their prices are increasing from $14 to $16 per participant in our learn to ski/snowboard program. This price will apply to both students and any parent ski/snowboard helpers. They will continue to allow our volunteer instructors to ski/snowboards for free. Thank you for turning in your paperwork on time last week.

I also made a mistake on the paperwork, payment for skiing and snowboarding is due the TUESDAY before the Monday that we ski. So the first payment for skiing is due Tuesday, January 3rd. Our first day skiing will be the following Monday, January 9th. Please pay Melissa (our secretary) and let her know how many children and adults you are paying for. You always have until 2pm on the Friday before we ski to cancel and not be charged. You may prepay for additional weeks if you are worried that you will forget to pay on time. Any money not used will be refunded at the end of the ski season. You may want to pay now in December due to January 2nd being a holiday and school will be closed.

Two parent workshops are being held this Wednesday, November 9th. Both workshops will cover teaching strategies to assist you as you are teaching your student math skills. A 4th-7th grade math workshop will be held at 11:00 am and a primary math workshop will be held at 1:30 pm. Thank you and we hope you can make one or both sessions!

Ski Registration and Information

Ski Registration forms and information are now available in your school mailbox or by clicking here. Registration ski forms will be due Friday, December 2nd. Please turn them in to the box near Mr. Hagen's office. The first ski day will be Monday, January 9th and the anticipated cost is $14 per student. In addition, we hope to have a parent training day at Badger on December 16th, so try to keep this open if you plan to teach skiing or snowboarding this year. The Elves and The Shoemaker~field trip on 12/2...signups and payment due by 10/28

The California Theatre Center is performing the play "The Elves and The Shoemaker" on Friday, December 2nd at 11:00. The play will be at the Tower Theater (maps available at school).

This will be a fun production as we enter the festive season! This fairy tale takes place in the Black Forest of Germany...this is a great way to incorporate our "Around the World" theme across the curriculum.

The cost is $5.50 per person. Please sign up and pay soon. Payments are due by 10/28 to confirm our seats. Maps and lesson plans are available on sign-up board.

Fresno State Farm Tour Field Trip coming on Friday, September 23rd

This Field Trip to the Fresno State Farm will be a wonderful educational experience geared for students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade.

Please sign up at Mountain Home School by Friday, September 16th.

Fresno State has a very strict policy that we need to follow. Please read the following carefully.

*No Children under the age of five years can attend a farm tour. The university has decided that children under the age of five are a safety risk! No strollers are allowed on property!

*Parents are required to park only in the designated farm parking and purchase parking permits to park on campus.

*Students are asked to adhere to the following rules:
-No climbing on or putting heads through fences
-No feeding animals
-No running
-Absolutely No petting, unless instructed to do so by the tour guide
-No throwing anything at any time
-No sandals, visitors MUST wear closed-toe shoes

Cost: $2.oo for each student attending farm tour
Please pay in advanced to Melissa. Parent chaperones are free.
Additional costs will be parking permits ($3.00 required) and ice cream (optional).

Schedule for the day:

8:45 Meet at Fresno State in LOT 'Y' (pick up map and packet at Mountain Home School)Parents MUST purchase a Parking Permit for the day ($3.00).
Permits may be purchased at dispensers or at the Police Department on campus.

Program Flyer: Constitution Day 2011: Powers of the President

NUMBER OF STUDENTS: 40 Maximum

TEST: If the connection TEST to the Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site in St. Louis does not work, I will let you know three days before the actual event.

Arrive 15 minutes early. The program begins right at 11:00 AM PST

Because of the grade level content, young children attending would not be advantageous.

Program Length

60 minutes

Description: The 11:00 AM PST program will focus on the President and international issues. Our scheduled panelists of political scientists, Presidential scholars, and Presidential advisers will be able to provide great insights into the questions above and your students’ questions as well as we discuss the powers of the President. Viewers will also hear directly from President George H.W. Bush and President William J. Clinton through video messages created specifically for the program. The program will air from the Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site in St. Louis, Missouri.

Program Format:

Pre-Program Information—The Constitution Day Study Guide prepared by The Missouri Bar is available as a download with this web exhibit if you enroll for our program. It is also available for anyone’s use at www.mobar.org in the Educators’ section under Constitution Day. The guide will include Constitutional issues to consider, questions, worksheets and other activities designed to get your students thinking about the issues that will form the focus of the program.

Program Order—The videoconference program will consist of the following segments. Student questions and comments will be welcomed throughout the program. This program will focus on Presidential powers in the foreign policy arena. A finalized program agenda detailing the specific powers to be explored in segment 2 below and specific examples of decision-making referred to in segment 3 below will be sent to schools upon their enrollment in the program. 1. Welcome and Introduction—Student groups and experts will be introduced and welcomed to the program. 2. Powers of the Presidency—This section of the program will explore the Presidential powers enumerated in the Constitution and the historical background and debate for determining those powers. 3. Process of Presidential Decision-Making and Implications of Presidential Action—This section of the program will look at historic examples of Presidential decision-making, processes used to make those decisions, and implications of those decisions on the separation and balance of power between the three branches of government as well as on the nation as a whole. 4. Summary and Closing—We’ll summarize the major Constitutional implications of the program’s discussion and close the program.

Objectives

Students will be able to:

1. Explain the purpose of Article II of the United States Constitution.

2. Evaluate and defend the role of the President in the American Constitutional System.

3. Explain how the executive branch has evolved since 1787 and the implications of this evolution.

4. Compare and contrast the executive branch of George Washington’s presidency with the present day presidency.

Wild Water Day August 19th at 11am

It’s time to have some fun! On Friday, August 19th, we will begin our new school year with a trip to Wild Water Park. The cost is $12.50 per person and the deadline to sign up & pay is Tuesday, August 16th. The fee is nonrefundable. Even if you didn’t originally sign up in June, we’d love to have you attend. We will meet at the park entrance at 11:00 a.m. to distribute tickets, so please arrive on time. Our field trip to Wild Waters Park is cancelled this Monday, June 6th due to an unfavorable weather forcast. It is rescheduled for Friday, August 19, which is the first week back to school!

Those of you who have already paid will be credited for the new date. If you didn't sign up and would like to join the fun, you may sign up next week or beginning August 1st.

It’s time to have some fun! Monday, June 6th is our annual Wild Water Day. The
cost is $12.50 per person and the deadline to sign up is May 27th. Remember the
complimentary tickets you may have won to attend their park are valid on all days except our
scheduled trip on June 6th. Payment is required when you sign up and is nonrefundable. Remember that no additional tickets will be available at this reduced price after May 27th.

Hello Mountain Home Skiers and Snowboarders,

As you may have already guessed, skiing is canceled for tomorrow, March 21st. Badger is actually closed today due to the inability to clear the roads with heavy snow and high winds. There is a chance that Badger may be closed tomorrow so if you decide you want to ski on your own, I would check the road conditions.

Mountain Home Skiing is over for the season. If you have any money left in your account I will be refunding the balance within the next week. I want to take a moment to thank you all for a great season. If you have a chance please make sure to tell our volunteer instructors thank you, they did a great job. So once again, Skiing is canceled tomorrow and we are finished for the year. Thank you and have a wonderful day,

Create Something Fishy

There will be a T-shirt printing activity on Tues., March 8 and Thurs., March 10 for those students and parents going on the Monterey field trip. This activity will take place during the K/1 Music, Movement and More class on Tuesday and during the 2/3 Variety Class on Thursday.
For those students (and parents) who aren’t in those classes, please call Joanie @ 642-1422 #13 and we’ll set you up in a different time slot. The materials will be set up those same days from 9:00 to 3:00 Tuesday (except during K/1 MM&M) and from 2:15-3:00 on Thursday.
 What you need to bring with you: a new, white 100% cotton T-shirt and a piece of card-board to be sandwiched in your shirt so the color won’t bleed onto the back.

No skiing tomorrow March 7th, join us instead for the Ocean Assembly

Based on the weather predictions for tomorrow, we are canceling skiing for March 7th. Badger Pass is requesting that we give them 24 hour notice if we cancel so we had to make a decision today. Badger also said that if you choose to still go skiing tomorrow on your own that they would not give the group rate of $14. We do not know if they would offer you any other deal if you came up tomorrow but you might mention to them that you are with our school.

On a side note we would like to let you know that Mountain Home School is hosting an exciting ocean assembly tomorrow and we still have spots open. The most space is for the 9:30 and 11am spots. If you have further questions feel free to call the school. So once again, skiing is canceled for tomorrow but we hope to see you at the ocean assembly. Thank you and have a great evening.

Get Ready 2nd Graders!! STAR Test Practice!

On Tuesday, April 5th from 10:00-11:15, 2nd graders will have the opportunity to participate in a practice for the STAR test. We will discuss test format, procedures, how to mark answers, vocabulary, and wording in the test questions.
The children will take a practice test of twelve math and twelve English/Language Arts questions and we will discuss the answers. A snack time will be included between the two sessions. If you are interested, please sign up on the class bulletin board or call Sylvia Sloas at 642-1422 extensions 18. All second graders are welcome!

Ski Information update - new Badger Policy for helmets

Badger Pass recently received a donation of new helmets by the Winter Ski Club. These helmets are free to members (you will need to show membership card) otherwise they are now charging for all helmets. Badger is giving us half off the normal price. The reduced price is $4.25 for child and $4.75 for adult. You will have to pay for rental of helmets at Badger Pass. As a reminder snowboarders are required to wear helmets and wrist guards. If you do not already own a helmet, you may want to consider purchasing one for your child. Early this year Costco did have a great deal on helmets, I do not know if they are still carrying them in stock.

Last Monday Badger was understaffed in the rental shop which made waits longer then usual but hopefully it will go much smoother next week. Before entering the rental shop please check with me to see if there are other instructions and that you have your yellow pass. Lets also try to arrive at 8:45am next week and beat the rush. Don't forget that you must pay the Tuesday before we ski and you have until Friday 3pm to cancel. Contact Eric Hagen if you have any further questions.

Picture Make-Up Day and Reorders

If you missed our fall picture day, now is your chance to get your picture taken and your face in our yearbook! There will be packets available to purchase. This is also a chance for you to reorder pictures you may have taken in the fall.

I have confirmed with Badger Pass that students will pay $14 (includes skis/snowboard, boots, poles, and lift pass with our ski instructors). Parents who would like to assist one of our instructors may also pay the $14 price and receive ski rentals/lift pass also. When you pay our secretary Melissa for skiing please specify how many adults and students will be skiing each week. As a reminder, you are responsible for making sure your child has snow clothes, gloves, goggles/glasses, and if snowboarding - wrist guards and helmet. (Badger has let us use their helmets in the past for no charge but supplies are limited).

Please follow the link below to print and fill out the following forms and bring them with you to the first day of skiing at Badger Pass. These forms were NOT included with your original paperwork.

Badger Pass Release of liability - All Adults and Students who are skiing/snowboarding must fill this out even if you have your own equipment.
Badger Pass Rental Form - All Adults and Students who are renting must fill this form out.

Additional Reminders:

You must pay $14 by the Wednesday before the Monday we ski. So January 5^th is the deadline for payment for our first ski day of January 10^th.
We will NOT ski on the following Monday's, January 17th, February 14th and 21st due to Holidays and Badger will not give us the $14 price. This is a change from what was originally listed for ski dates.
On the Monday that we ski, call (559) 642-1422 ext. 5 – to confirm that our school will be skiing that day even if the weather looks good. If the school cancels for any reason you will not be charged for that week.
**If you must cancel for any reason, this must be done by the Friday before we ski to be guaranteed that you will not be charged for the following Monday. To cancel – call Eric Hagen at (559) 642-1422 ext. 20**
Any money left in your ski account will be refunded at end of ski season.

Cress Electric Kiln Model FTX27P for sale - $800 - includes many molds

The school purchased this kiln years ago. Comes with a large selection of molds. In great condition has only been used maybe twice. The Cress Electric Kiln - model FTX27P is 220AC and 42 amps. Near as I can tell the retail is $2659 just for the kiln and not including all the molds. Call (559) 642-1422 if you are interested in taking a look. All proceeds will go back to benefit Mountain Home School Charter and Glacier High School Charter.

If you have considered enrolling your student with Mountain Home School or Glacier High School, come take a tour starting August 9th. This is a great time to examine and ask questions about all the great curriculum Mountain Home School has to offer. PE Test makeup for 5th, 7th, and 9th graders April 27th at Mountain Home School

Students who missed PE testing (5th, 7th, and 9th graders) will be able to makeup this state required PE test at 1pm with Mr. Mercier. Please contact your charter teacher or Mr. Mercier to let him know that you are coming. Due to the lack of a track at school students will have to have parents time them running a mile (4 laps at the High School) and give the results to Mr. Mercier.

The California Achievement Tests are scheduled for our MHSC students in grades 2-8.

Please note the following dates:

7th grade Writing Test Tuesday, March 2nd at 10:00 am (@MHSC)
5th & 7th grade P.E. Test Tuesday, March 23rd at 3:00 (@ Wasuma)
2nd-8th Multiple Choice Testing Begins Monday, Apr. 26th—May 7th (8:45 am—12:00) (@MHSC and an option of possibly at a location in Mariposa to be announced)

Students in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th, & 7th grades have 2 days of multiple choice testing. (Most likely on Tuesday and Wednesday)
Students in 5th & 8th grades have 3 days of multiple choice testing. (Tuesday - Thursday)

If you have questions or concerns about your child participating in any of the tests, please talk with your
charter teacher. For those of you who want additional materials to help your child become familiar with
the types of questions he or she will be asked on these tests, your charter teacher can provide you with
State-Released Test Questions packets and/or practice test booklets.
